A Windows 8 e-reader on the way ?

You’ve probably heard about the partnership between Microsoft and Barnes & Nobles, that will work together to release a Windows 8 tablet. But it seems that the device will be more an e-Reader.

According to some source, Microsoft will invest about $300 millions in Barnes & Nobles to create a new venture named NEWCO. They will have 17,6% of stake in this new branch and wish to developp the NOOK e-Reader, but also a new application Nook for Windows 8.

Microsoft won’t stop their investment at this amount. The firm plans to invest another $305 milions within the 5 next year in NEWCO. It won’t be surprising to see the firm invest more than this for e-reader area: they will invest $60 millions per year during 3 years after the release of windows 8, and also $25 millions more for R&D.

Microsoft doesn’t want only to compet with Amazon, which is the leader in e-reader, Apple, Google, and Kobo, they are more looking to bring the interest of people back to e-reading area.

This new partnership between Microsoft and B&N is designed to “accelerate the transition to e-reading, which is revolutionizing the way people consume, create, share, and enjoy digital content”, and particularly in educational publishing, an area dominated by Apple yet.

William Lynch, Barnes & Noble CEO, said:

“The formation of [this new subsidiary] and our relationship with Microsoft are important parts of our strategy to capitalize on the rapid growth of the NOOK business, and to solidify our position as a leader in the exploding market for digital content in the consumer and education segments.

Microsoft’s investment in Newco, and our exciting collaboration to bring world-class digital reading technologies and content to the Windows platform and its hundreds of millions of users, will allow us to significantly expand the business.”

With a very privileged access to the catalog of Barnes & Noble, Microsoft will be able to propose a large ebook library for its next Windows 8 that will equipped dedicated Microsoft’s tablets.
