Yahoo and Facebook are friends again

After 4 months of lawsuits, Yahoo and Facebook decided to settle the patent fight, in a “strategic deal” that includes no cash.

The conflict was provoked in March by Yahoo’s short-lived CEO, Scott Thompson. The complaint alleged that Facebook infringed on 10 Yahoo patents covering Internet advertising, privacy controls, customization, messaging and social networking. Then Yahoo added 2 more patents to the lawsuit.

Facebook replied a few weeks later, by including counterclaims against Yahoo for allegedly breaching 10 Facebook patents, including ones related to photo-sharing and content personalization.

Now, it appears the antagonism is dissolving into a partnership that could benefit both companies. Under a patent portfolio cross-licensing agreement, the companies will work together to distribute advertising across both Facebook and Yahoo.

We are excited to develop a deeper partnership with Facebook, and I’m grateful to Sheryl and her team for working hard together with our team to develop this dynamic agreement, ” said Ross Levinsohn, interim CEO of Yahoo!. “We are looking forward to building on the success we have already seen to provide innovative new products and experiences for both consumers and sponsors. Combining the premium content and reach of Yahoo! as the world’s leading digital media company with Facebook provides branded advertisers with unmatched opportunity.”
