European ICT Awards – Interview by ITOne

lundi, 03 septembre 2012

1/ You have been awarded European Innovation of the year, where does your inspiration come from?It was a real great surprise for our company, to have been rewarded European ICT innovation of the year, and we were very proud: Innovation was finally recognized!
This product, the UBOOK (Universal noteBOOK), is the result of a personal observation made some years ago.

Working in an international context we needed to use several different languages like Russian, English, Chinese, and keyboards didn’t provide more than two languages at the same time. So each time we had to change language, we had to turn off our computer to plug another keyboard, and we have to stock all these different keyboards. What a waste of time, waste of materials, waste of efficiency!
The solution: a computer providing a multi language keyboard.

When we were travelling to meet customers or partners, we had to bring with us external devices we need to work more easily, and to be productive even on the go. But this is not simple, it takes a lot of space, this is heavy.
The solution: a computer that can integrate all these external devices.

But nothing existed at that time, even tablets and smartphones as we know today! The inventor of the UBOOK has an idea to solve those problems: replacing the standard physical keyboard by a multitouch input screen, that will be able to display multi language keyboard, but also multi accessories, and why not also, new functionalities. And patents were filled! That’s all, UBOOK was born!

2/ How do you approach an innovation process in your company?

UBOOK means Universal noteBOOK, so each people will be able to take part to this huge adventure. And this begins in the company.

We regularly organized brainstorming meetings during which all members of the company, whatever they are, creative, marketers, or others, can express their ideas to improve UBOOK or to solve some specific problem in different area.
The goal is to create strategic advantages in the marketplace to make UBOOK been accepted by the customers. We think especially about how our innovation is going to add value to our strategic intents, and we target first the areas where this innovation has the greatest potential to provide those strategic advantages, as medicine, creative people…

We also work very closely with some strategic partners that will share their experience, and their specific needs, in order to design new opportunities for UBOOK, as UBOOK is really a source of new opportunities for each final user. And with the SDK we will provide, each customers will be able to take part to this innovation process.

3/ What kind of challenges do you have to cope with?

The challenges our company has to face with are the same challenges the other start-ups have. Being a start-up is not an easy trail, and trying to launch a new product, with a new brand, is really difficult even if the product you’ve proposed is really interesting.

We have to prove that we can do it, that we know our product, and that it can be successful on the market. We have to convince potentials partners, bankers, investors, that this is a very good product, before convincing customers and final users.

But the biggest challenges, and all start-ups will say the same, are finding funds, and finding people really convinced and involved to work with you, because the “start-up life” is very hard to follow.

4/ What makes your product special?

Our product is not a single product and one might think. UBOOK is a full concept including 3 different products interacting together: a LAPTOP featuring a multitouch input screen, an ONLINE ACCESSORIES STORE, and a TOOL to help you express your creativity.

UBOOK (short for Universal noteBOOK) is 100 percent adaptable to the user’s need, whether an adult, or a child, or an elderly, at home or at work, for business or play, and in any language and country. As it is Universal, all people, all final users having some skills in development or not, may contribute by creating a new useful application, and sharing it with others on the store.

And more than that UBOOK is a true green product, ECO friendly, that take care of the planet. With the virtualization of external devices into software applications we will save the raw materials and natural resources of the planet. We won’t have to produce too much mouse, graphic tablet, phone, and piano…. You will have them directly included in your laptop, at your fingertips, for an easy use, but also for more lightness, and efficiency.

And as UBOOK is universal, we will produce it on one single line of production ready to be shipped in the whole world without any difference on keyboard, or binding stock protocol. The manufacturing process will be also more simple and easy for all key players.

The innovation began in our company, and continues throughout the chain until the end user who may also get involved in the process.
This is why UBOOK is so special!

5/ What do you expect for the future?

We will pursue our efforts to launch our products on Q1/2013, with a first presentation at the next CES in Las Vegas in January 2013.

We will work very closely with our current partners like Intel in the framework of ultrabook, as UBOOK is aimed to have an ultrabook form factor.

We hope also to find more partners, commercial, technological, financial, or even institutional, to get involved with us, to make UBOOK concept become a successful reality.
So if you may be interested to join the adventure, and if you want more information, feel free to email us ( contact@najmtek.com). You are welcome!
