Amazon New Kindle Fire HD

Amazon alone announced a pair of new Kindle Fire HD tablets on Thursday that feature an impressive selection of specifications, with 7- and 8.9-inch displays. Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HD boasts a much more vibrant screen than the original tablet that came out about a year ago. That makes buying movies and TV shows to watch on the device a lot more appealing.

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD comes with a 1920×1200 1080p HD display with in-plane switching (IPS), Advanced True Wide (ATW) polarizing filter, and which also has 25 percent less glare. Other features for the tablet include a front-facing HD camera, an OMAP 4 4470 processor, as well as two antennas which allow for better sound processing.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 inch also comes in a 4G LTE version for those wanting high-speed data access when out and about.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD features a 1280×800 screen resolution, but offers much of the same features as its bigger, 8.9 inch version. The 7-inch version has the same processor, front-facing camera, blue tooth connectivity and more.

Both screen sizes feature 10-point multi-touch support. The 254 pixels per inch, as Amazon says, are “indistinguishable to the human eye” . In other words well-known: it’s a retina display.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also said: “Not only does Kindle Fire HD feature the most advanced hardware, it’s also a service. When combined with our enormous content ecosystem, unmatched cross-platform interoperability, and standard-setting customer service, we hope people will agree that Kindle Fire HD is the best seven-inch tablet available anywhere, at any price.”

Amazon will sell 3 versions of the Fire HD:

  • 7-inch at a price of $199 in 16GB, and $249 in 32GB,
  • 8.9-inch at a price of $299 in 16Gb and $369 in 32GB,
  • and a third version 8.9-inch 4G LTE at a price of $499 in 32Gb and $599 in 64GB.

An Amazon spokesperson also confirmed that all three Kindle Fire HDs will boast Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich.
