The new iPhone 5 is Here !

The new iPhone is here ! It has been revealed to the world a few hours ago at the the Yerba Buena Arts Center in San Francisco. Today is a crucial day for Apple as the iPhone accounts for a huge part of the company’s sales.

With the iPhone 5, Apple has gone from a 3.5 inch display to a 4-inch display, one that boasts a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1136 by 640 screen resolution. It also comes with a screen that offers integrated touch and richer color saturation. The larger screen makes room for another row of icons.

The new specs show the iPhone5 coming in at 7.6mm thick, 18 percent thinner than previous phones. It is also 20 percent lighter, coming in at 112 grams. Apple announced the phone is “made entirely of glass and aluminum.”

The iPhone 5 will come with an A6, with a faster CPU and graphics compared to the A5. This is 22 percent smaller than the previous chip, making it more energy efficient, that will offer two times faster processing as well as graphics that are twice the speed of the iPhone 4S.

This year’s model is also the first 4G iPhone, working on multiple 4G frequencies.

The iPhone 5 will also get a new dock connector called Lightning, which is 80 percent smaller. Apple will sell an adapter to work with older accessories.

One of the biggest updates is to the camera and iSight. The camera now has an 8 megapixel sensor, 3,264 x 2,448 pixel resolution with backside illumination, hybrid IR filter, five-element lens, f2.4 aperture, is 25 percent smaller and can take panoramic photos.

Also as expected, Apple is releasing a new version of its phone software, iOS 6. It will have a new mapping software, as Apple ditches the one from Google it had been using. The new software will have turn-by-turn voice navigation – a feature Google had limited to Android versions of its mapping app.  Apple said the phone’s virtual assistant, Siri, will be giving the directions.

The iPhone 5 will be available in white or black. The price will remain the same as the iPhone4s: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB. It will be available for pre-orders starting on Friday the 14th. Shipping will start on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
