iOS 6 Will Arrive on September 19

Apple just revealed its next major OS update, iOS6, that is coming on September 19th. iPhone 3GS and above, the iPad 2, the new iPad and 4th-gen iPod touch (only this one!) will be powered by iOS 6, touted as the most advanced mobile operating system in the world. Be sure to upgrade your devices the moment it is available for download.

Little has been added in the way of functionality aside from what we saw at WWDC. Hereafter are just some out of 200 new features you can expect from Apple’s new iOS version 6.

1. Better Maps:

Apple ditched from Google maps in favor of TomTom (a popular GPS provider in North America) for beautifully designed maps and turn-by-turn navigation. Apple built his own home-cooked Maps app. It’s not a finished product quite yet, but the addition of 3D maps and turn-by-turn navigation are welcome additionnal features.

2. New Siri:

The search functionality of Siri has been greatly expanded to fetch sports scores, list movie times and book tables at restaurants. Siri is also going multi-lingual, featuring in Canadian English and French, Spanish, Italian, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese, and will work in more countries.

3. Facebook integration:

It’s easier than ever to share on Facebook with the new iOS6. Profile information will be integrated into Calendar so you won’t get to miss a thing, especially since you now get notifications for both Facebook and Twitter updates from the notification centre. Just be careful with contact sync, as Facebook will overwrite your contacts primary info with its own.

4. Shared Photo Streams:

Now you can share just the photos you want, with just the people you choose, by selecting them, and sending them to the people you want, over iCloud to other iOS6 users.

5. Passbook:

This app can turn your iPhone into a GPS-enabled virtual wallet, keeping your cards, coupons and tickets safe, convenient, handy and fuss-free.

6. Better Facetime:

FaceTime is now on cellular networks as well as on Wi-Fi, that means you can do it over 3G without needing a wi-fi connection. As phone numbers and Apple IDs are unified in iOS 6, if someone calls you via your phone number on FaceTime, you can answer on your iOS device or on your Mac. All messages sent to your iOS device will also update in real-time to your iPad and Mac.

7. Safari gets more:

Safari gets iCloud tabs, so you can pick up where you left off from another iOS 6 device. Pages viewed on iPhones, iPads, MacBooks (running Mountain Lion) can all be accessed from any device.
