iPhone 5 launch day !

Announced by Apple last week, the iPhone 5 is available today all around the world in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan,  Singapore, U.S., U.K., Canada, France and Germany. It will go on sale in 22 more countries a week later.

In a now familiar ritual, Apple fans formed long lines at Apple Inc. stores in those countries by thursday night to be the first to pick up the tech juggernaut’s latest iPhone on Friday early morning. The iPhone 5 sold out of its initial pre-order online in about an hour, so many customers who simply can’t wait to receive theirs are relying on being near the front of the line.

Some Australian fans went to extremes to be among the first by arriving at Apple’s flagship store downtown Sydney on last Tuesday _ three days before the release.

In Singapore, which there isn’t any Apple store, a woman waited 12 hours to be the first of the 10,000 people in the Southeast Asian city-state granted the opportunity to buy one at the Singapore Telecommunications launch-day event.

More than 60 people have camped by thursday at Apple’s flagship location on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, and more than 15 in front of Chicago’s largest Apple Store!

But not everyone in the crowd was out to get the phone for himself. Some people like Julian Diggs, first in line at a Chicago location, has plans to sell his spot in line for as much as $1,200, and get back in the line to purchase a phone for himself. Others, however, would never give up their spot to anyone else .

Analysts have estimated Apple will ship as many as 10 million of the new iPhones by the end of September.
