Autonomous Vehicles will be available in 2017!

At Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, the Governor Jerry Brown was joined on stage by Sergey Brin, Google co-founder, to sign a new law that would allow autonomous vehicles to operate on California public roads.

Today, we’re looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow’s reality,” said Brown. “This self-driving car is another step forward in this long march of California pioneering the future and leading not just the country, but the whole world.”

California follows thus two others states in legalizing driverless cars: Nevada and Florida.  The law passed in June 2011 in Nevada, and allowing autonomous vehicles to operate within the state became effective in last March. In last May, a Google self-driving car was the first to receive a license to operate under this new law. Florida Governor Rick Scott signed autonomous vehicle legislation in April 2012, and similar legislations are under consideration in Hawaii and Oklahoma also.

Sergey Brin predicts that driverless cars will be available to consumers within five years, in 2017! “You can count on one hand the number of years it will take before ordinary people can experience this,” he said. “I expect that self-driving cars are going to be far safer than human-driven cars,” Brin told an audience of applauding Google employees.
