New Android virus alert

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (I3C), which is a government task force that includes the FBI, the NW3C, and the BJA, is warning Android smartphone users about two new viruses making rounds.

The IC3 has been made aware of various malware attacking Android operating systems for mobile devices,” the warning said. “Some of the latest known versions of this type of malware are Loozfon and FinFisher.”

Loozfon is a Trojan horse for Android devices. It lures its victims by sending them e-mails with links promising “a profitable payday just for sending out email”.  When the link is clicked, the malware embeds itself onto the phone and steals contact details stored on the infected device as well as the phone number of the device, which is the main goal of the malware.

FinFisher is a Spyware also installed via a bogus e-mail link or a text message. It is capable of taking control of the mobile operating system’s components for both remotely monitoring and even remotely controlling the infected device. FinFisher attacks not only Android devices, but also devices (smartphone, tablets…) running iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile as well.

“The first thing people should understand that your smartphone is more like a computer. By making a comparison, is much closer to the computer they have at home or office that were used 4 or 5 years ago, “said Confidential Vicente Diaz, senior analyst at Kaspersky Lab malware. Indeed, in 2011 we don’t use the phone as in 2004, the year that the first known cases of virus for came these platforms.

Today, more than one third of the Android Apps may hide malware and there may be more than 5 millions infected devices worldwide.

You can download Norton’s Mobile Security Lite or another Android antivirus from the Android Market to see if your device is infected and eliminate the virus there may be.
