iPad lose 14% Market share to Android Tablets

Apple’s tablets made up 55 percent of Q3 shipments, but it lost 14 percent to Android competitors, according to new research from ABI research. This is Apple’s lowest share since the original iPad debuted two years ago.

The famous Apple’s iPad continues of course to dominate the tablet market, but tablets running the Google Android system are gaining ground, and fast. Shipment numbers from Samsung, Amazon and ASUS follow behind Apple, as Google’s mobile OS is now utilized by 44 percent of tablet shipments, according to ABI’s report. iOS and Android together represent 99 percent of tablet shipments, leaving little room for RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook or Windows-powered tablets.

According to ABI senior practice director Jeff Orr:

As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers — new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content.

ipad shareThe iPad Mini, which was released during the third quarter, was not included in the sales figures, but it is not expected to help Apple reclaim market share from Google, ABI predicted.

With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad Mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year,” Orr said.

Despite the report’s dire predictions, the iPad remains one of the more sought-after gadgets this holiday season, especially among kids. According to CNET, nearly half of children from 6 to 12 years of age list the iPad as their most wanted gadget, for the third year in a row. This year’s lists also includes the iPad mini, which should prove to be fairly popular with Santa.
