500M users on Google+

Google has just revealed a number of new Google+ stats on its blog, including that so far, more than 500 million people have joined the network.

Today Google+ is the fastest-growing network thingy ever. More than 500 million people have upgraded, 235 million are active across Google (+1′ing apps in Google Play, hanging out in Gmail, connecting with friends in Search…), and 135 million are active in just the stream,” says Gundotra, Google Senior VP Vic Gundotra.

So, Google+ has over 500 million users – but not really. As Google directly integrates Google+ across all of its services, its usage numbers are poised to grow across the board, but it’s still particularly interesting to see that 135 million, or just ~27% (135/500) of Google+ users are actually using the service proper.

On last thursday, Google has also introduced Google+ Communities, which allows users of the social network to create and join large common interest groups complete with discussion, hangouts, and seamless sharing across the web.The company hopes that this new feature will spur more groups to make Google+ their social network of choice.

The company also continued the developement of Nik Software’s apps after it acquired the company in September. It has also launched a new, free Android version of Snapseed the former iPad app of the year, while making the existing iOS version completely free.
