Angry Birds Animated Movie Coming in 2016

Many well-known console games such Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, and Super Mario Bros. have inspired Hollywood movie adaptations. Now we can add Rovio Entertainment’s popular physics-based, avian-flinging Angry Birds to that list.

The studio behind the blockbuster mobile game – had hired John Cohen, a prolific producer of animated and family-oriented films, to produce a 3-D animated Angry Birds. The movie has been set to debut during the summer of 2016.

cohen_johnI’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists,” said Cohen. “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I’ve personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie.”

Rovio is producing and financing the project outside the usual studio system in order to retain creative control, and will find a distributor only after the film is finished. With Maisel securing funding for the project, it looks as if Rovio will be able to pull this ambitious endeavor off.

So far no writer or director has been announced, but who needs a writer or a director when you have a cartoon based on a mobile game about birds that don’t talk!  Since its debut in 2009, the Angry Birds game has been downloaded more than 1 billion times across platforms and versions. The most recent venture, Angry Birds Star Wars, soared to the top of the US iPhone charts within 2.5 hours of release.

Which means there may be “Angry Birds” all over the place in the summer of ’16. Plan and prepare accordingly.
