Zeal iON, the built-in HD camera ski goggles

Nowadays, ski goggles are not just for eye protection anymore! Zeal Optics, a colorado based company takes contemporary gadgetry a step further, by introducing what it’s calling an “industry-changing goggle” that has a HD camera built-in able to capture videos and photos.

We’ve already seen camera-goggles before. For example, Liquid Image makes a variety of ski goggles and underwater goggles with built-in cameras. The difference with the iON googles is that it comes from a dedicated eyewear manufacturer rather than a consumer electronics brand.
So buyers will get what should be a high-performing pair of ski goggles with anti-fog, mirroring Optimum lenses and 100% UV Protection for bright days.

zeal-ionAdditionally, the Ion HD Camera can shoot full 1080p or 720p HD video and will capture 8-megapixel still photos. The Ion HD Camera goggles have a 170-degree lens with infinity focus to help you shoot your turns, jumps, tumbles, and scenic mountain vistas.
The camera and lens also automatically adjust for variable lighting conditions, which can be a big help when you’re moving from dark shadows to bright snow.

And the best: you can play your HD clips and photos back immediately inside the goggles on a built-in viewfinder and there are big, glove-friendly buttons on the side of the frame for playing, pausing, and fast forwarding, easily controlled.
A rechargeable lithium-ion battery gives up to a six-hour run time. A micro-SD card slot provides storage for footage captured as you shred.

Zeal iONs will be available as part of Zeal’s 2012-13 winter line for US$399. They will come with your choice of Matte Night Black or Moss Green lenses.
