HTC plans two Windows 8 tablet

HTC plans to make two tablets based on the Windows operating system, giving Microsoft another ally in its challenge to Apple and Google in the $63.2 billion market.

Rumors said the taiwanese company is working on a 12-inch device and a 7-inch version that would rival Apple’s iPad Mini and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Interestingly, the 7-inch tablet is also said to be capable of making phone calls, although it remains unclear if this through a service like Skype, or if it will be 4G-LTE capable.

htc windows8tabletARM-based chips manufactured by Qualcomm will power both the tablets, that will run Windows RT, a pared down version of Windows 8 that only runs apps preinstalled by Microsoft–including Office 13 –or those downloaded from the company’s online Windows Store.

There is no official launch date for the tablet at this point. However, HTC is reportedly targeting Q3 of 2013 for the rollout. Unless something changes between now and Q3 of next year, which is highly possible, the 7-inch HTC Windows RT tablet would be the first Windows tablet in that screen size category.
