CES 2013: Nvidia announces portable Android-based gaming system

CES 2013 kicks off with a flood of announcements.  Nvidia is making its own portable gaming console/controller hybrid called “Project Shield”, a “pure Android” device, powered by Tegra 4 processor.

nvidia-shield-1SHIELD is a quad-core portable gaming console for open platforms, designed for gamers who yearn to play when, where and how they want, and who want ultimate control and precision. It is slightly larger than and looks similar to an Microsoft Xbox 360 game controller, and boasts a 5-inch, 720p “retinal” multitouch display with 294dpi.

It will have lithium batteries that last for 38 hours. In addition to an HDMI port, the system has a micro-SD slot, a micro-USB slot, and a headphone jack. The system will also be able to output HD gameplay and video to a 4K TV screen.

Project SHIELD was created by NVIDIA engineers who love to game and imagined a new way to play,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer at NVIDIA. “We were inspired by a vision that the rise of mobile and cloud technologies will free us from our boxes, letting us game anywhere, on any screen. We imagined a device that would do for games what the iPod and Kindle have done for music and books, letting us play in a cool new way. We hope other gamers love SHIELD as much as we do.”
