Amazon crashes for 50 minutes Thursday

Amazon.com Inc.’s home page crashed on Thursday afternoon. The main Amazon.com webpage was inaccessible to web surfers for about 50 minutes in an highly unusual outage.

amazon crashAround 2:30 p.m. ET, users began complaining that they weren’t able to access Amazon.com’s homepage. Visitors were greeted with a white page and the error: “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable.”
Some were able to get to other parts of Amazon’s site, and the mobile app appeared to be unscathed. Amazon-owned properties like Zappos and IMDB were also unaffected.

Amazon says the entire outage lasted nearly 50 minutes. “The gateway page of Amazon.com was offline to some customers for approximately 49 minutes,” Amazon said Thursday in an emailed statement. “Other pages of the site were accessible.”
