Android, the new king of the tablet market share !

A few months ago, market research intelligence firm ABI Research claimed that Android-based tablets were eating away the iPad’s market share at a rapid rate.

iPad-market-shareThe bigger worry for Apple was that the iPad Mini has failed to reclaim market share from Android-based tablets. Instead of eating android market share, there is a serious threat of the company losing the market share of its other products, like the larger iPads. Meanwhile, Android’s market share has risen to 44%.

Last Thursday, IDC (International Data Corporation) issued a preliminary report on global tablet shipments across the world, revealing that we have hit a very long-expected milestone: Android tablets seem to be outpacing the iPad!

Those estimates show the overall tablet market expanding rapidly, and Android is grabbing a large chunk of that growth, while Apple tablets, including iPad and iPad mini, dropped below 50% market share for the first time. Apple’s fourth-quarter share of shipments came to 43.6%.

The iPad remains the bestselling tablet, but Android rivals continue to carve off some of its market share, because Google allows anyone to make and sell an Android device. Android tablets offering, from Amazon, Asus and Samsung, among others is much larger,  and they’re often cheaper than Apple’s offerings.

This is the exact same cycle the smartphone market went through over the last five years. In that field, Apple has been content to concede some of its market share to protect its margins. We will see in the future if the tablet market shakes out the same way.
