Iran’s President Ahmadinejad is ready to go to space

A week after successfully sending a monkey into space, and retrieve it alive, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has declared he is prepared to risk his life and become the first human to be sent into space by his country’s fledgling space programme.

mahmoud ahmadinejadOur youth are determined to send a man into space within the next four, five years and I’m sure that will happen,” he said during a ceremony in Tehran where two new Iranian-made satellites were unveiled, according to ISNA news agency.

I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists,” he said after meeting Monday with Iranian space scientists, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency.

Iran, which last week announced it had successfully sent a small monkey into space, has said it wants to send a man into orbit by 2020. Iranian officials said the monkey’s launch was a scientific precursor to sending humans to space, and denies its space program has any link with its alleged nuclear ambitions.

iranian monkeyIf Ahmadinejad does eventually go to space, he will not be the first Iranian to do so. That distinction is held by Iranian-American engineer and entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari, who paid to visit the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 2006. She was the first, and so far the only, female space tourist.
