Amazon KINDLE FIRE HD 2 rumored to cost less than $99

How low will Amazon’s tablets be sold? We’re now hearing that Amazon may be expanding its Kindle Fire line of tablets with a new, low-cost version of the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, according to a report from TechCrunch.

kindle fire hd2This new tablet will be sold at a price tag of only $99, less than half the price of the current Kindle Fire HD. That would be the beginning of the end for the competition! At a price that low, this new Kindle Fire HD 7-inch would be able to more easily compete at the tail end of the Android-based tablet market, an area today dominated by low-cost tablets out of China.

This new Kindle Fire HD tablet will feature a TI OMAP processor, just like its more expensive stablemates, and a 7-inch display with a 1280 × 600 pixel resolution. It’s not clear what will be different with this new lower cost model compared to Amazon’s current tablets, or when it will be available for purchase.

amazonIf Amazon is able to launch a tablet that can even undercut these low cost competitors, it would give the company yet another advantage in the rapidly growing tablet market, where the kindle fire already account for 7.7 percent of the U.S. tablet market.

Update: An Amazon spokesperson denies the rumor. “We are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware.”
