Facebook will unveil the Facebook Phone at April 4 event

Facebook just has sent out invitations to a press event at its headquarters on April 4th to “Come See Our New Home On Android”. This invitation naturally led to fresh speculation about the company’s intention to produce its own Facebook-centric smartphone.

For nearly 18 months, rumors of a Facebook phone have continued to persist. And for nearly 18 months also, Facebook has publicly denied its interest in building its own phone. “Facebook phone doesn’t make sense,” Zuckerberg said in an interview last fall. He reiterated the point again this past January: “We’re not going to build a phone.”
Of course, if a Facebook phone will be unveiled next week, it wouldn’t be the first time that a CEO has said one thing publicly while planning on doing exactly the opposite!

facebook androidSources indicate that Facebook will unveiled its own modified version of Android Operating System, with deep native Facebook functionality on the homescreen, a move similar to the way Amazon has modified Android for its Kindle tablets.  Sources also indicate that Facebook is working with HTC to produce a smartphone based on Facebook’s modified Android that will be sold “as a lifestyle brand, not specifically for its hardware or software.”

For sure we will know more on next Thursday!
