Zuckerberg unveils new Home on Android

zuckerberg unveilMark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has just introduced today a new application for Android-driven smartphones and tablets. He took the stage a little after 1pm at Menlo Park, California, to unveil what the company is calling “FACEBOOK HOME“.

If you were waiting for something radically new and different, you will be disappointed! In fact, the long rumored Facebook phone turned out not to be a phone at all. Facebook Home is something more than an application, and slightly less than an operating system. The idea behind it is to bring Facebook content right to the home screen of your phone or tablet that makes it easier for people to spend more time with Facebook.

The company’s new Facebook Home Android experience will coming to a brand new phone from HTC, the HTC First, which is at best a mid-tier device. This is the first Facebook Home optimized phone in the world. In other words, this is a mid-level smartphone (by Android spec standards), customized with Facebook Home.

facebook htc 12 aprilThe new HTC phone, integrated the service will be available starting April 12, with AT&T Inc. as the carrier, for a price of $99.99. You will choose between four colors: black, white, red and pale blue and is designed to be big, but not too big.

HTC calls it “the best Facebook experience” and the “only phone with Facebook Home pre-loaded and optimized.” These optimizations mean that notifications for emails and calendars will come built-in to Facebook Home. It’s also the first phone to ship with Instagram pre-loaded.

The genius of the Facebook phone is that the company finally made a phone without making a phone at all!
