Alibaba buys 18% stake in China’s Twitter-type Weibo service

Chinese biggest e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, that is 23% owned by Yahoo, has just acquired an 18 percent stake in web portal Sina’s microblogging service Weibo. It is its first big move into selling advertising on China’s highly competitive social networks.

Alibaba will pay $586m for the stake, valuing Weibo at more than $3 billion. It also took an option to increase its holding in the message service to 30 percent, according to a statement released recently.

jack maAlibaba and Weibo will work together on user account connectivity, data exchange, online payments and online marketing.

We believe that the cooperation of our two robust platforms will bring unique and valuable services to Weibo users, as well as making the mobile Internet a core part of Alibaba’s strategy,” Jack Ma, the Alibaba chairman, said in a statement.

The alliance is expected to generate about $380 million in advertising and social commerce services revenue for Weibo over the next three years.
